Duyole Pitan-Payne
One of the main characters in the novel, Duyole is an electrical engineer and successful entrepreneur, having created a firm known as “Brand of the Land.” His full name, it is revealed midway through the novel, is Aduyole Muyomi Pitan-Payne. He is a scion of a wealthy family from the south of Nigeria. His father is an industrialist with extensive business dealings in Austria, which includes a joint enterprise with the Lindtz chocolate company. Little is discussed of Pitan-Payne’s mother, but it is at one point indicated that Duyole is of mixed European and African ancestry. His family is extensive and extremely well-connected in Lagos and throughout the country. His eldest brother, Kikanmi is a real estate mogul with properties covering much of Lagos.
