Summary

In Chapter 6, Tiny, her husband, and Chouette drive to Malibu to see Doctor Great. In the waiting room, Tiny studies the other owl-babies. Their odd caps and voices unsettle Tiny.

In the exam room, when Tiny realizes Doctor Great is implanting artificial intelligence into children’s brains, she rushes to Chouette’s rescue. On the drive home, Tiny’s husband badgers her about giving up on her music and relationships. Tiny knows he “doesn’t care” about these things (179). She realizes how unhappy she makes him (180).

Tiny and Chouette go out into the dark together. Chouette flies and hunts, but gets caught in a net. Tiny manages “to untangle” her (182). When they return home, Tiny’s husband is shocked by Tiny’s injuries. He calls an ambulance. Chouette looks “on blandly” (184).
