Summary
In 1952, following the death of a celebrity named Susan Peters, Bette Shaw develops a strange tingling in her lower body. She calls a neurologist’s office and is directed to call another number. That night, she meets her husband Ray for dinner and is irritated when Ray continues to seem demoralized by Susan Peters’ death. Ray is ostensibly a writer, but Bette is convinced that he never writes anything and has begun to lose interest in their relationship. Bette tells Ray she is seeing a neurologist the next day and Ray informs her that he cannot drive her because he needs to write. Bette drives out to the address she has been given on her own the next morning, leaving Ray asleep at home. When she gets there, she discovers that it is a psych ward. She turns...
