36-40 Summary
Victor visits his mother. She is in a bad way, lying in bed looking as thin and vulnerable as a child. She still thinks he is her old lawyer Fred and tells him she wants to see Victor. She raises a shaking hand towards Dr. Marshall and asks if she loves her son. After a pause, Dr. Marshall says yes. She asks Victor if he loves Dr. Marshall and he says yes as well. It is a shame, she says, Victor will never be able to love anybody. Dr. Marshall takes Victor to go to the chapel for a chat. She says all the facts in his mother's diary check out. Victor asks if she truly believes he is the second coming and Doctor Marshall says it would not surprise her. Every time he talks to a patient they become very peaceful.
