The Swamp

The swamp is the heart of this novel, it is where the Old Ones live and have lived for more than 200 years. It is the only place where Briony feels truly herself and truly at home despite her living at the parsonage. The swamp is a physical representation of nature and the old world, one that existed and exists without technology or machines, and needs to exist in order to sustain the spirits and beings that dwell there.
