Briony Larkin
Briony Larkin is the main protagonist as well as narrator of the novel. She is the daughter of Father Larkin and the sister of Rose. Her own mother died in childbirth with her sister, Rose, and she spent her childhood with Stepmother until her untimely death due to arsenic poisoning.
Briony, for all of her life, has been able to speak with the Old Ones and began to write stories about them, detailing their past and various escapades. She also writes for her sister Rose, who really enjoys being placed into Briony's various fairy-tales. The Stepmother is responsible for Briony's entire worldview, making her believe that she burned down the library not with matches and kindling but with her witchly powers, and telling her that the reasons she can speak with the Old Ones is due to her also being an Old One.
