Pentaquod

Pentaquod is a Susquehannock Indian who left his war-loving tribe to seek peace. He moved from what became Devon Island because he noticed the erosion taking place during storms. Pentaquod joined a Choptank tribe and became their leader. He befriended Edmund and offered Edmund his daughter in marriage, but Edmund refused, a refusal that confused Pentaquod. Pentaquod later cut ties with Edmund because Pentaquod believed Edmund was destroying the land by burning off trees for fields to plant tobacco.

Edmund Steed

Edmund Steed is a Catholic who volunteers to go to the colonies because he is tired of being prosecuted for his religion. Edmund claims Devon Island for himself and buys it from Pentaquod.
