Summary

In “Voyage Seven: 1811,” Thomas Applegarth, a tenant on a farm owned by the Steeds, became infatuated with the idea that America had once had an ice age, an idea he got from a book he borrowed from Elizabeth Paxmore. She agreed that what he proposed was possible. To pursue his suspicion, Thomas made a voyage from the mouth of the Susquehanna River to the source of the river.

In “The Duel,” during the war of 1812, Sir Trevor Gatch sought revenge for his father who died in the American Revolutionary battle in the Chesapeake in 1781. When he heard the Whisper had been damaged and was at the Paxmore boatyard for repair he decided to find the schooner and destroy it.
