Summary
In Chapter 6, Defne hands Mallory an extensive schedule and to-do list for the day. Mallory reminds herself of Easton’s advice: to “fake” it until she makes it (69). Mallory is mesmerized by the extensive library at Zugzwang, which reminds her of Dad. Defne introduces Mallory to Oz, Mallory’s officemate. Oz rudely warns her to never speak in his presence. Mallory spends the day reading a book Defne assigned her.
Once home, Mallory’s family ask how her first day of work at her new job went. They think she is working at center for seniors. Mallory lied because of the painful associations of chess with Dad. That night, Hasan picks Mallory up in his car. They kiss. Mallory never gets attached to those she hooks up with. She feels she has no time for anything beyond her family.
