Charlie Bucket
Charlie Bucket is the protagonist of the book, and is the only child in the Bucket family. He shares a tiny cottage with his parents and four grandparents, and is simply entranced by the luxurious smell of chocolate at Wonka's Chocolate Factory, prompting him to ask his Grandpa Joe all about it. Unfortunately, Charlie knows he is too poor to buy many of Wonka's treats, but every year on his birthday he gets one chocolate bar and relishes it.
Charlie is excited to hear about the Golden Ticket contest because it allows him to dream of what could happen if he were the lucky winner.
