James Herondale
James Herondale is one of two protagonists in the novel, the other being Cordelia Carstairs. In this book, he faces two critical problems: the first being his confusion at the nature of his relationship with Cordelia and the second being his nightmares of Shadowhunter murders and what those nightmares could signify about his involvement.
After marrying Cordelia in a sham wedding, James believes he still loves Grace because the bracelet the latter forced him to wear compels him to love her through magic. As he grows closer to Cordelia, the strength of his emotions eventually wears down the bracelet's strength, and after a battle with Belial the bracelet breaks and James confronts Grace about it. He is too late to tell Cordelia he loves her, though, because she runs away to Paris with Matthew.
