Summary

Chapter 9: “Deadly Wine,” describes the Hell Ruelle, a salon which Cordelia, Matthew, and Anna attend. They meet Malcolm Fade, High Warlock of London, as well as Hypatia Vex, the warlock party host. They are served drinks by a mermaid while they ask Hypatia for help. She refuses until Cordelia reveals that she saw the mermaid poison the drinks that Hypatia and Malcolm are about to drink. The mermaid’s treachery is dealt with, and Cordelia puts her request to Hypatia anew: she asks the warlock to help them investigate the poisonous demon bites suffered by Ariadne, Barbara, and Piers. Hypatia agrees to speak to Ragnor Fell, another warlock, to see what he knows about the kind of magic most likely used to create the demons which caused the bites.
