Paradise Alms House
A retirement home in Paradise is Tyler's workplace and Mala's home at the end of her life. The alms house is remote, with wide grounds and gardens, overlooking a cane field. Tyler is the only male nurse on staff. The other staff and residents are wary of Mala at first but soon grow accustomed to her presence, and to her special way of imitation the calls and sounds of the many birds and creatures that live around the alms house.
The House on Hill Side
Chandin has his house built on a cheap plot of land in the affordable part of town called Hill Side. Though he initially has grand plans for his home, he settles for a modest layout traditional for houses in the area, with the main rooms resting high on wooden stilts, accessible from staircases at the front and back of the house...
