Point of View
The novel is narrated in the third-person, always from the perspective of Yadriel Cabrera, a sixteen year-old, gay, transgender boy living in East Los Angeles who lives with his father and their extended family. He dreams of being accepted by his family for who he is and being able to participate in their magical family rituals as a brujo, a male witch. He has spent the years since his mother’s death lamenting the loss of her and the unconditional acceptance she provided him with. His relationship with his father, Enrique, is much more complicated because Enrique has struggled to let go of the idea of Yadriel as his daughter and he often misgenders him. He also struggles to accept him into the family rituals that are deemed appropriate only for men.
