Los Angeles

Los Angeles is the overarching setting of the novel. This is the setting where Julian grew up and died and wanders around as a ghost. The city also functions as a character in the novel because Yadriel is introduced to racism and structural inequality through his own experience in Los Angeles.

Mexico

Most of the characters in the novel are connected through their shared Mexican heritage. Mixing of Spanish and English words throughout the narrative also forms the basis of the characters' slang. They celebrate Mexican holidays and maintain their connections to the culture.
