Cissy's star-shaped rock necklace

Cissy first acquires the necklace at a rock show in Arizona while driving to Cayro with her mother. At the time, Cissy sees it as a small piece of hope in her situation, after being wrested away from her home and losing her father. To the reader, the necklace represented Cissy's future interest in caves, rocks, and geology.

The Dastun

Delia's old Dastun makes frequent appearances throughout the novel. In the beginning chapters, it represents Delia's desire to return, to leave California behind and get back to Cayro and Amanda and Dede. Later, the Dastun represents freedom for Dede, and her connection to her mother. The Dastun is the first place Delia and Dede bond, and it is where Dede finds freedom and joy when she begins taking night rides alone.
