Summary
In Chapter 15, Hallow met with Helena, who had moved out of the brownstone two years before. She was disenchanted by the family’s isolation and perpetual divorce from their community. Helena advised her cousin to be accommodating to Maman and Josephine’s needs in order to pacify their aggression. She promised to devise a plan for Hallow to participate in community work.
Josephine busied herself looking through home décor magazine in Chapter 16. She was desperate to leave Harlem and start a new life with Landon. Landon hinted that he had a new client for the caul. The prospective buyer, Mr. Epelbaum was “a laboratory scientist as well as a philanthropist” (219). He proposed a scheme to the Melancon women to patent their caul and invited them to attend a party. Helena arrived home during the meeting.
