Book 4, Chapter 36-40 Summary
Flynn and Hickey played the organ and the others sang. This lessened the tension inside the Cathedral. Baxter nods to Maureen that they are ready for the escape. The Cardinal opens the gate in the communion rail. Flynn watching all of this, alerts Megan and Leary. Flynn tells the Cardinal to stop walking just as Father Murphy pulls the switches on the circuit-breakers, plunging the sanctuary into darkness. Baxter lifts the brass floor plate, and Maureen drops into the space. Baxter is hit by one or more bullets and can't follow.
As Megan, Pedar, Flynn and the others gather around the opening, Baxter is told he was just grazed by the bullet. Flynn is yelling into the hole asking Maureen if she is okay. If she doesn't come back, he says, he will kill Baxter. She tells Flynn that...
