Part 3, Chapter 10, Phase Transition Summary

Teri and Kate go to school Monday at Teri's insistence. They float through the day, with Teri accompanying Kate to her classes. They both fall asleep in Chemistry. As Kate falls asleep, she believes she is scum, wonders what her life will be like, and wonders what Teri's life will be like. No one bothers Teri, because everyone knows what happened.

Mitch is not in school. Travis says he has spoken to Mitch's mother, who says Mitch doesn't want to talk. She relates to Travis that Mitch has been acting strangely, that he's been cleaning. At home, a funeral director meets with Teri. Kate calls MIT pretending to be her mother, to discover that she was rejected because she didn't have anything extra to offer MIT besides good grades and competition prizes.
