Summary

Phase III- Turning Away begins with Chapter 9, Roller Bearings in the Sand. G and Ronald have found that they share a long-term interest in mechanics and engine repair. After a back injury caused Ronald to retire from fishing, he started doing small repairs for friends and neighbors to indulge his passion and make extra money. Ronald observes G closely as he fixes the sewing machine, and when G demonstrates the finished job later that day, Ronald is impressed, vowing to return soon. When he does a few days later, Ronald brings some rusty tools and an old Honda generator for G to have a look at, delighting Lucy with a gift of honey and baking powder, which inspires her to make scones for Sunday afternoon tea.
