Summary
Chapter 8, Appearances, opens with two friendly fishermen in a small boat from neighboring Badu Island finding Lucy naked on a rock trying unsuccessfully to catch fish herself. One of them speaks the local pidgin dialect and offers to take her to their fishing grounds in the surrounding waters. The younger of the two is named Titom, who drives the boat, and the older man, Ubia, displays remarkable skill in diving for and spearing giant ocean crayfish, which Titom explains are worth high prices on the mainland. Some hours later, with the small boat filled with cray and fish, Titom and Ubia head toward the beach of a tiny island they seem to know well.
