Summary
Chapter 3, Tempo and Patterns begins with Lucy’s flashback to the days before arriving on Tuin when she and G were in Brisbane shopping for supplies. He is excited about their selection of seeds and the prospect of a fresh vegetable garden on the island. Their point of departure for Tuin is Thursday Island, close to the Northern mainland, where the white population lives amid the vestiges of a faded colonial past. She has tea with a few of the white locals and notes the proximity of dingy indigenous-only drinking establishment.
