Importance: When the narrator first starts seeing Braithwaite, she is determined to convince the psychotherapist that is indeed unwell and in need of his help. In this scene from her first therapy session, she dons the Rebecca Smyth persona and begins interacting with Braithwaite according to how Rebecca would interact. Because the narrator has read Braithwaite's books and understands his theories, she tries to design an illness that would interest him, thus inspiring her above words. This line, however, foreshadows the ways in which the narrator will not only lose her sense of self, but actively endeavor to cast her off in favor of an alternate self.
