Summary
The narrative shifts ahead to 1924 and shifts to the perspective of Arthur Doud, the owner of Carstairs’s piano factory. He arrives at his house to change clothes, and he tells his housekeeper, Mrs. Feare, that there was an accident at the factory. He then goes to Grace’s house. Grace has already been informed of the death of her husband, Jack Agnew, who was killed in the aforementioned factory accident. Grace and Jack’s daughter, Lillian, is four years old, and she is restlessly running about the house, uncomprehending of the tragedy. Arthur finds Grace sitting with the local minister. Arthur offers his condolences, and he offers to pay for the funeral. Grace accepts his offer, and she also requests that he return Jack’s long-overdue library books and pay the late fees.
