Part 1: Page 74-120 Summary

Sue Snell goes to the local hangout to have a root beer and finds Chris Hargensen there. Chris is there with her boyfriend Billy Nolan. Chris's dad wasn't able to get her into prom but she thinks she is going to crash prom regardless. Chris gets angry with Sue for not walking out with hers knowing that Miss Desjardin couldn't punish them if they all refused to take the punishment. Sue says she took the punishment because they had earned it. Sue knows that this isn't true, that she had taken the punishment because she didn't want to chance missing prom. As Sue leaves Chris and Billy, she begins to cry at the thought of what kind of person she is.
