Summary
We first meet Mrs. Lee K. Jaffe (based on the real-life Lee Jaffe), often referred to as Mrs. J, at the lavish Golden Door restaurant at the New York International Airport. Being the public relations director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, she was accompanied by her charge of ladies including her secretaries and file organizers. While the narration was in first person, it was not in the perspective of Mrs. J, but rather, uniquely, in the perspective of one of Mrs. J’s fairly new secretaries, Maggie Gleason. Miss Gleason remained the sole narrator throughout the whole chapter and the rest of the book with exception to numerous parts that are written in third-person limited.
