Summary
Chapter 42 is written from the perspective of both Robin and Strike. Strike is mad at himself for the manner in which he dealt with Whitaker. He also thinks about how the encounter had not helped him decide whether Whittaker is the killer or not. He decides to tell Wardle about him, but realizes that the police will probably not follow up. Robin calls later that night and Strike tells her what happened. They also talk about Stephanie's reaction and her decision to go back to Whittaker. He tells her to keep staking out Laing’s place even though she does not think he is there. Strike says the same about his stake out for Brockbank, but Robin believes that he is there.
