Summary
In "Violets for His Furs," Israel was contacted by Jack Hock, a friend whom Israel had turned away from because he forged her signature on some papers about the option rights to one of her books. Hock was getting out of prison on probation because he had contracted AIDS.
Hock giggled when he heard the story of Israel’s life in crime and how she could no longer sell her fraudulent letters. She told him she needed $5,000 to pay off Alan. She planned to do so by copying valuable letters owned by various libraries and institutions, and then replacing the original letters with the copy. His job was to sell the originals. Israel offered him 50% of the earnings for his help. Israel describes this stage in her life as a criminal as her second trimester.
