Point of View
This story is told by a third-person narrator who appears to be omniscient. There is a focus on Bruce because he is a central character, but the narrator also describes the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of other characters as well. For instance, in Chapter 9, the narrator gives Karen’s reasoning for shooting Rick and leaving him for dead: “Through his own stupidity he was about to get caught. But not her. And the two-million-dollar fee would not be divided” (256). Earlier, the narrator described Rick’s growing realization of what had happened to him: “He wanted to check his wristwatch but he couldn’t lift his hands. Nothing was moving” (254). The other significant characters are given similar treatment by the narrator as their thoughts and feelings about particular circumstances are important to the novel.
