Summary
In August on Emerald Isle, the family discovers that James Comey, the former FBI director who was fired by President Trump, is staying a few houses down from them. Despite their best efforts, they never got to see him. Aside from Comey, the other big topic that week was their father who was not able to join them. They worry about him driving and living alone in a cluttered and poorly kept house, but Mr. Sedaris is set in his ways. After leaving Emerals Isle, David, Hugh, and Amy stop in to visit him. David looks at old family photos taken on Emerald Isle in 1981 and reflects that that was a time when they were all filled with a golden outlook on life as they "gazed into the future and saw only promise" (252).
