Summary

David is surprised to learn that gay marriage is legal in the United Kingdom as he, unlike Hugh, does not pay attention to British politics. However, he is aware of when the United States Supreme Court is set to rule on the issue. Out on one of his walks, he reflects that, regardless of the ruling, he never expected to see this day in his lifetime. He remembers that, when he was young in the early seventies, "being gay felt like the worst thing that could happen to a person" (121) As a teenager, he kept his sexuality a secret, hoping it was a phase or that one day he would be cured by psychologists. After coming out to a friend when he was 20, her acceptance made David see that he could accept himself as well.
