Summary
Elio became convinced that Oliver had slept with numerous women in the nearby town. One afternoon, at Oliver’s invitation, Elio accompanied Oliver into town while he collected some pages of his manuscript from his Italian translator. Falteringly, Elio tried to communicate his feelings to Oliver who was surprised.
Later, Elio told Oliver that he wished he hadn’t spoken and Oliver responded that he was going to pretend that nothing had been said. They began cycling home and Elio offered to show Oliver a place that was popular with tourists. When they got there, Elio revealed that he often came to this spot to read alone.
