Summary
In Chapter 11, in the present, Clarence mentions that he was always skeptical of Warren’s claims that he did not throw at Joe intentionally. Paul said he should be skeptical because the injury was intentional. Paul goes on to tell Clarence that he was at Shea Stadium on August 24, 1973, when Joe was hurt.
In Chapter 12, which is set August 24, 1973, Paul remembers the competition was brutal between his father and Joe. His father was determined not to let Joe walk and Joe was determined not to strikeout. On the fifteenth pitch, Joe finally hit the ball, a hit that went over the fence. As Joe ran the bases, he allowed himself a single fist pump, nothing cocky or intended to show up the pitcher. Regardless, Paul knew there would be trouble. He notes it was Joe’s 21st home run, and his last.
