Anxiety Disorders/Coping with Anxiety
Individuals who experience anxiety disorders develop ways to cope. Sometimes the person uses distancing from others to avoid anxiety. Autumn Collins is a senior in high school during the events of this novel, and she is coping with an anxiety disorder that requires medication. Autumn has chosen not to tell her friends about this issue because she fears they will treat her differently or stop being her friends altogether. While she feels that her new friend, Dax Miller, has a point when he says she should tell her friends, she also believes that she can cope with the disorder without telling anyone. The problem is, her friends are drawing their own conclusions, come to have specific expectations, and put her in stressful situations because they do not know the truth.
