Hằng
Hằng is a refugee from the Vietnam War who finds herself living in Dallas with her uncle, Chú Quốc, and her cousin, Angie. Hằng is haunted by guilt over her separation from her younger brother, Linh, whom she inadvertently gave away to American troops during the evacuation of children from Việt Nam and whom her family has not seen or heard from in several years. When Hằng learns that Linh is living in nearby Amarillo, she becomes intently fixated on making contact with him and bringing him back to what she views as his rightful place.
In the early parts of the novel, Hằng is relatively uninitiated to American culture, and frequently finds herself put off or nonplussed by the behavior of the people around her, and particularly by her chance road companion, LeeRoy, a wannabe cowboy from a wealthy family...
