Summary
In Chapter 14, it is now 1948. In 1948, Phephelaphi has been accepted to the General Mission Hospital as its first black nurse. Two weeks later, Phephelaphi discovers that she is pregnant. She understands that she will lose her job if her training academy discovers that she is pregnant. Standing naked in front of the mirror, Phephelaphi tries to think. She goes into a box of her papers and retrieves the only letter that she has ever received in her life. It is the response to her application, admitting her to the program. Rushing out of the house, she sees Sidojiwe E2 as though for the first time. Phephelaphi wanders through the city until she arrives at Deliwe’s house. Deliwe offers her a glass of water and listens to Phephelaphi’s story.
