Summary
During one of Sajjad and Hiroko’s language lessons, they begin to talk about marriage, with Sajjad subtly indicating that he feels trapped in a potential arranged marriage. Hiroko discusses how she will never get married. Sajjad believes that this is because of her grief over Konrad, but Hiroko insists that it is because of the three bird-shaped burns that have scarred into her back as a result of the nuclear bomb. Hiroko then unbuttons her shirt and shows the burns to Sajjad, who insists that even the burns themselves are beautiful.
However, when Elizabeth sees Hiroko semi-unclothed in her backyard, alongside Sajjad, she immediately believes that Sajjad was in some way trying to assault her.
