Love Triangle

The love triangle, or menage a trois, is an important theme that runs through the novel BURNT OFFERINGS, by Laurell K. Hamilton.

The relationship between Jean Claude, Anita and Richard is an atypical menage a trois, or love triangle because normally the parties involved would be willing and comfortable in the relationship. In this case, Richard and Anita are bound to Jean Claude because of the vampire marks he has bestowed on them when they allowed him to drink their blood. Richard had given his blood to Jean Claude willingly, and because of this the wolves are Jean Claude's beasts to call. Anita had given her blood to Jean Claude and Richard in order to save the lives of the men for whom she cared. By giving her blood to Jean Claude, Anita is now tied to him as his human servant.
