Summary
Approaching Zainab’s hut one day, Ya Ta hears the sound of a man singing a Hausa lve song. Fanne gives the new wives a coconut and a handful of date fruits, since the camp is low on food. Zainab shows off her bracelets and plastic rings, given to her by her husband Ali. Ya Ta feels jealous. At night, Ya Ta watches her husband watch “his favorite video, the one he likes to play over and over again” (207). The video shows a plane crashing into one of two towers, followed by a second plane crashing into the second tower.
Zainab boasts about all the guns that her husband owns. Ya Ta wonders where Boko Haram gets their guns. The camp’s food supplies are running dangerously low. Ya Ta wishes that the men would go on their next jihad if only so...
