Point of View
The story is written from the alternating perspectives of Melody Mayflower and Harmony Smith, who are twins separated at birth. The story is presented in first person with a perspective limited to that of the twin who has the control in that chapter. This limitation is somewhat confusing in that the twins don't always reveal everything there is to know about themselves. This is especially true of Harmony who doesn't reveal early on that she has already married or her true motivations for leaving her home. For example, Harmony goes with Jondoe when he believes he is about to impregnate Melody. She seems to take this step in an effort to save Melody from becoming pregnant out of wedlock, an act she seems to believe would be a sin. Melody never fully outlines her motivations or thought process and it's left to the reader to determine...
