Summary

In Part Three, "Welcome to Mars!," some of the girls leave for college. Some travel to schools "across the country" (77). When they see the campuses they know they "don't belong" (77). They listen to wealthy white students talk about their families and vacations.

The girls consider "the word 'legacy'" (78). They consider their own familial histories. When they talk to other students, they have difficulty conveying their experiences. They wander the campuses, craving escape. They remind themselves they are "good girls" and force themselves to stay (79). They are supposed to be living the American Dream, but they are unsure for what and for whom (80).
