Point of View
In terms of narrative point of view, the storytelling shifts perspective several times. The first point to note about this aspect of the book is that each time, the shift is into past tense, and into third person limited – that is, focusing on the experiences, perspectives, and thoughts of a single character. A second point to note is that the majority of the story is told from the point of view of central character Ti-Jeanne, even as there are also frequent shifts into the perspective of her boyfriend Tony, her grandmother Mami, and antagonist Rudy. On a couple of occasions, narrative point of view shifts into the perspective of minor character like Premier Uttley and Margaret White, Uttley’s surgeon.
