Describe the text's structure. How does this structure inform Streep's thematic explorations?
Brothers on Three is organized into a prologue, four overarching sections, and an epilogue. Parts One through Four each contain a series of numbered and titled chapters. Many of these chapter titles originate from things the Arlee community members have said. The titles also act as navigational tools for the reader. By centralizing the Arlee community members in his textual structure, the author underscores their foundational role in his story.
In the prologue and Part One, Streep introduces the reader to the Arlee landscape and to his primary story subjects. He assumes a narrative tone and stance in order to present the world of Brothers on Three without his authorial intrusion. It is not until Part Two that Streep's first person perspective truly arrives on the page.
