Summary
In the prologue, "I'll Be There," at Providence St. Patrick Hospital, in Missoula, Montana in March 2017, 16-year-old Will Mesteth Jr. stood by his great-grandmother Sophie Haynes's bed. Her health was failing. Sophie had a picture of Will on the wall "in his red-and-white Arlee Warriors jersey" (1).
Will was so quiet that his teachers worried about him. "His mother, Chasity, said he was just quiet" (2). His father, Big Will, worried his son wanted to disappear (2).
Will spent his childhood with Sophie. She had raised him. He lived with her "on seventy acres of the Jocko River Valley in Arlee, Montana, near the southern end of the Flathead Indian Reservation" (2). Will was accustomed to taking care of Sophie.
