Chapter 43 Summary
Three bodach gather around Jacob, seemingly oblivious of Odd and Rodion. When the bodachs leave the room, Jacob says the robed and faceless figure is the Neverwas, which Odd interprets as Death. The Neverwas first came to Jacob in the hospital, he was seven, and the Neverwas had a face, but it hurts to remember. Jacob says that the ice monsters are like Neverwas's dogs. Neverwas teaches them to kill and sends them to do bad things. When Odd tells him his mother would have been proud of him, his face softens.
