Chapter 40 Summary
Romanovich spills out his cap full of pieces. One of the larger pieces shook and clattered apart into four exactly the same pieces, the rest began shaking and separating into smaller pieces. Brother Leopold and Rodion exchange glances. Odd knows they knew each other previously.
The Brothers asks Odd what he knows. He is reluctant, so the Abbot tells the Brothers to consider this a confession, and the Brothers take his story on faith. Rodion asks if he knows when the trouble might start. Odd had counted only seven bodachs, which meant they still had time. Rodion suggests they count again. Going from room to room, Odd counts 72 and knows more would be on the second floor. "It's coming soon."
