Chapter 33 Summary
Odd keeps running but can't help looking back. It is moving forward along the ceiling and the wall instead of the floor, which makes protecting the children more difficult. It never stops rotating like a machine, but it has the clumsiness of a newborn and falls, which slows it down.
Odd reaches the other end of the tunnel and hears the odd keening sound he'd heard earlier. He races for the service entrance, but trips. Then the bony creature is upon him. Terrified, he watches as patterns make and remake themselves in a display of control and strength. Odd senses vanity and arrogance that is strangely human. He tells it to kiss his posterior and climbs out the service entrance. Unbelievably, it doesn't follow. It goes away. Odd screws the panel back on.
