Summary
In Chapter 15—“Beating the Darkness”—in October 2004, Joseph was asleep in his home in Bel Air when he was awoken by nearby gunfire. Violent tensions had continued to rise between protesters, police, and external military forces. A provisional UN government had replaced the Aristide administration. Joseph decided to hold his usual church service on Sunday, but more gunfire occurred. Joseph urged the few gathered parishioners not to be afraid; he told them to take courage in their religious faith. Some armed men forced their way into the church and used it as a temporary base. Some members of the community became angry with Joseph, as they thought that he had given armed men permission to do so.
