Summary

In Chapter 10—“Gypsy”—Edwidge’s parents brought Edwidge and Bob back to their apartment in Brooklyn. Edwidge and Bob talked to their brothers, Karl and Kelly, whom they had only met once before. However, they soon formed a strong rapport as siblings. Mira gave Edwidge the gift of a typewriter so that she could write long letters to Joseph. Edwidge now views this as a critical moment in her personal development as a writer. By this time, Mira had become a full-time cab driver. Since he owned the cab and worked for himself, his car was colloquially called a ‘gypsy cab.’ The work entailed long hours, stress, and occasional danger. One time, Edwidge asked her father if she would rather do something else for work, and he said that he would, but he continued to drive a cab for a living.
