Summary
In Chapter 5—“We’re All Dying”—Edwidge arrived at the airport to fly back to Miami. While waiting for her plane, she called her brother Karl, who gave her advice and encouragement about raising a child. She then called a friend and talked about Mira’s prognosis. The friend said not to think about the prognosis and simply take things as they come. In Chapter 6—“Good-bye”—the narrative shifts to 1978. Joseph was back in Haiti after his laryngectomy. He could no longer speak, so he communicated to people with words and gestures. He used to oversee a local school in addition to his church, but because of his muteness, he had to hire a principal to oversee the school and two associate pastors to run the church.
